Comparison among three External Hard Drives – Seagate, WD & iOmega

So here we go, in this post we will make a comparison of 3 external hard drives, i.e. Seagate Free Agent Go, Western Digital My passport and iOmega ego. Just have a look on our comparison below and decide which hard-disk you want to go for!external-hard-drive

  1. Seagate Free Agent Go

This is very compact external hard disk from Seagate. This model got an upgrade and now available up to 1TB. They have 7200rpm which was previously only 5400rpm.

What’s good?

  • Available Capacities: 250GB to 1TB.
  • Very Sleek with dimensions of 5.34 in L x 1.97 in W x 7.04 in H (250GB & 500GB) inches that fits in your pocket and 5.34 in L x 2.91 in W x 7.04 in H (750GB onwards).
  • Powers and Connects via USB 2.0.
  • Several Colors are available to choose (only for 500GB or lesser capacity version).
  • Sync data between computers.
  • Protect private folders with software encryption technology.
  • No CD required. Just plug and use.
  • Dock is available as optional accessory which eliminates cables.
  • Consumes very less power.

What’s bad?

  • Plug and use is only available for Windows 
  1. Western Digital My Passport Essential SE

    This is also compact portable hard disk similar to Seagate. 750GB and 1TB versions are available. The price of both Seagate and Western Digital are similar.

What’s good?

  • Retrieve your valuable data to its original location whether you’ve lost all your data or just overwritten an important file.
  • Visual backup displays your content in categories and shows the progress of your backup.
  • Continuous Backup happens automatically.
  • Data protection for unauthorized access or theft with password protection and 256-bit hardware-based encryption.
  • Powered and connected directly from the USB.

What’s bad?

  • Only available in 750GB and 1TB versions.
  • No docking port available.

What’s good?

  • Rugged, durable and slim design
  • Drop Guard to withstand the toughest of travel environments.
  • Compatible with PC and Mac—USB 2.0/1.1 connectivity
  • USB 1.1/2.0 Connectivity
  • 4 colors such as Ruby Red, Silver, and Blue are available.
  • EMC Retrospect Express for Backup
  • Comes in  320GB,500GB and 1TB versions

What’s bad?

  • Software needed to be downloaded from internet for security and Backup. Backup software license is included in the package.
  • Only 1 year warranty (registration required for 2 more years of warranty)
  • No docking port.

Final Verdict

All the hard disks are portable and easy to carry. Iomega eGo provides only 3 years warranty whereas other two provides 5 years of warranty. All the hard disks use USB connectivity.  Seagate Free Agent Go has good performance and also consumes less power. Western Digital My Passport Essential SE also gives good performance also has got good Encryption. Iomega eGo is has got drop guard but no proper software bundle and limited warranty. Choose accordingly if you need slim and sleek portable hard disk to carry in your pocket go for Seagate, if you expect more protection and good backup go for Western Digital. If you are a rugged user go for Iomega eGo. Well, if you really want to get one, we would suggest to go for either a 1TB or 2TB External hard drive.
