Apple ipod touch 3rd generation was released in September 2009 after a year of launch of its 2nd generation version. In the new version there are several new features added to it.
Comparing the Features with the 2nd Generation
- The Third Generation of I-Touch is available in the capacity of 8GB, 32GB and 64GB whereas 2nd Generation had capacity of 8GB, 16GB and 32GB.
- No change in the size (2.4 in x 0.3 in x 4.3 in) or screen resolution (480-by-320).
- 2nd Generation I-Touch had normal Earphones whereas this 3rd generation iTouch has Earphone with Remote and Mic (Not available in 8GB version). Other accessories like USB cable 2.0 and Dock adapter remains the same.
- Has 800MHz Processer and OpenGL ES 2.0 for Better Graphics.
What’s Hot?
- With the new processor applications load faster and have better graphics than the older version.
- Some of the new features with the software updates are stereo audio streaming via Bluetooth, and iPod-to-iPod/I-Phone wireless game playing, Voice Memos application for voice recording with external microphones, system-wide Spotlight search feature, Google Street View for Maps, and widescreen keyboards for applications and the last feature which is the remote control and keyboard functionality for Apple TV.
- The voice command feature is also there in the new version where the songs can be played by saying the name. Skip, Shuffle and pause can also be controlled by voice commands.
What’s not?
- Lack of video camera is a big disappointment. After the release of I-phone people expected camera on I-Touch.
- Battery Life of the 3rd Gen I-Touch was only 30Hours of audio with 6Hours of video playback whereas the 2nd Gen had 36Hours of audio playback with same video playback.
- Battery Percentage option is missing in the new I-Touch.
- NO 802.11n Wi-FI connectivity and lack of FM receiving and transmission.
Conclusion
Even though there are some minor changes made on the hardware and software the other things like screen, dimensions and audio quality remains the same. The missing features like camera, FM are real disappointment. Only the voice feature is the big thing in the new version. If you need to upgrade wait for the 4th Gen. The 8GB version doesn’t even have the voice function so if you really need to buy go for the 32GB or 64BG version.
